Staff Tax Accountant

Purpose: Provide best-in-class support to the business on accounting and tax-related functions. This position’s primary responsibility is to ensure we provide accurate sales/use/property tax information to internal/external partners and state tax agencies. This position is also responsible for timely completion of month-end journal entries, account reconciliations, tax audits and payments.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing state sales/use/property tax audits including audit reporting, filing, payment and resolution and making process recommendations based on findings
  • Responsible for accurately and efficiently processing month-end journal entries for sales tax payment reclassification and any other necessary adjusting journal entries
  • Analyze and review internal processes to ensure continued sales/use/property tax compliance
  • Review data/internal reports for accuracy to ensure proper functioning of reporting systems
  • Maintain current knowledge base of new sales/use/property tax laws and trends
  • Generate and distribute sales/property tax filing, reporting and funding requests to Deloitte
  • Perform monthly GL account reconciliations (50094, 114310, 120300, 120301, 120227, 130966)
  • Analyze and review GL accounts for potential issues/entries that can be cleaned up
  • Quarterly review and preparation of New York City Commercial Rent Tax returns and payment
  • Prepare annual California Tourism Assessment and Chicago Non-Titled Use Tax form 8402(b)
  • Provide data for Ohio/Oregon CAT and Portland Clean Energy Surcharge reporting and payment
  • Responsible for timely completion of Census and Bureau of Economic Affair filings
  • Provide Ad Hoc system reports when needed
  • Maintain accurate records of sales/use/property tax accounts and data
  • Assist with and provide data as necessary for indirect tax forecasting
  • Process weekly check runs as well as Ad Hoc check runs
  • Create and maintain accurate process descriptions SOP’s/ Documentation of Accounting processes
  • Assist location Manager with department coverage and department projects

 

Key Relationships:

  • Internally – AP Management, Accounting and Finance Teams, Corporate Tax Dept., Retail Operations, Marketing
  • Externally – Tax service providers, Auditors, State and Federal Tax Agencies

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of sales & use and property tax topics
  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles, including general ledger, journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Experience managing state tax audits
  • Proficiency with Windows programs, specifically advanced Excel knowledge
  • Intermediate SAP Experience (Accounting and AP Transactions)
  • Ability to lead effective calibration meetings and present audit findings to senior accounting management team
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a team-oriented setting as well as individually
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to multitask and differentiate between routine and urgent tasks
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping a must
  • Not afraid to take initiative and be proactive

Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience
